Marshall University head coach Royce Chadwick has announced the hiring of John McGraw as Assistant Coach with the Thundering Herd. McGraw replaces John Sutherland, who took the position of Associate Director of Athletics at Marshall in March.
"John is a tireless worker. He has all the tools to be a great recruiter for us at Marshall. His knowledge of the college game is outstanding and his contacts are limitless," head coach Royce Chadwick said. "I expect big things from him as our newest family member."
McGraw spent the 2008 season as a graduate assistant with the Herd after serving two seasons as the head coach at Notre Dame Prep (Mass.). At Notre Dame Prep, McGraw led the team to a runner-up finish in the 2005-06 NACA Tournament while winning the Big Apple Recruiting Christmas Classic in both seasons at the school.
Prior to his time at Notre Dame Prep, he was the head coach at Patterson School (N.C.) in 2004-05 and John Jay College (N.Y.) in 2003-04. At Patterson School, McGraw led his team to a win in the NACA (National Association of Christian Athletes) Tournament. That team was also named Educator's Basketball Association National Champions.
At John Jay College, he posted a 16-4 record after taking over a team that started out 1-6. His 16 wins set the single season record for the college. He amassed a 90-14 record as a head coach at those three stops.
At Notre Dame Prep, McGraw coached current Herd players Tania Walters and Rashedah Henriques. He has also coached players who have gone on to play for major Division I-A programs including North Carolina, Louisville, Syracuse, South Florida, Colorado, Wright State and Memphis.
Before joining the coaching ranks, he founded the Big Apple Tournament of Champions, which has become a major event on the women's basketball summer recruiting circuit. He also started up Big Apple Recruiting, a service used by several Division I-A programs.
The Endicott, New York native graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts in 1996. He is currently working towards his master's degree in athletic administration at Marshall.
